Team of the Year - Goalkeepers

Words: Staff Writers

The Supporters’ Team of the Year competition is your chance to reward those PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland players that have shown outstanding skill, leadership and entertainment value over the course of the 2014 season.

Only players nominated by the senior head coaches at the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland clubs are eligible for selection. However, the choice of the final eleven players is entirely up to you – the supporters.

To assist with selecting your Supporters’ Team of the Year, we profile those players nominated for the coveted goalkeeper position.

Daniel Valcicak (FNQ FC Heat)

The American shot-stopper joined Heat this season and made an immediate impact, quickly claiming the position of first-choice goalkeeper. Previously a stand-out at college level in the United States, Valcicak’s sharp reactions proved crucial in helping Heat to a second-place finish in the league, as well as qualifying for the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32.

Michael Turnbull (Brisbane Strikers FC)

A headline grabbing mid-season recruit, the former Olyroos representative played at the highest levels of European football before taking a three year break from the game. His return to competitive action this year offered Strikers much-needed experience and defensive organisation as they battled for a top four finish in the league and ultimately advanced to the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 16.

Andrew Ralph (Redlands United FC)

Returning to the Red Devils this season after a stint with Auckland club Waitakere United in New Zealand's ASB Premiership, Ralph quickly rediscovered the form that previously made him a fan favourite at the bayside club. Fighting back from a mid-season knee injury to reclaim his spot as first-choice goalkeeper, Ralph's acrobatic saves and sharp reflexes kept Redlands in the Finals Series hunt until the final rounds of the competition.

Brandon Cuminao (Olympic FC)

The youngest of the goalkeeping nominees, 17-year-old Cuminao’s performances saw him advance from Olympic’s Under 18’s and Youth sides to become a senior team regular for the eventual Grand Finalists. Showing maturity and bravery beyond his years, Cuminao made several telling saves in Olympic’s historic Westfield FFA Cup win over Melbourne Knights and appears certain to have a bright future in the game.

Shane Viitakangas (Palm Beach SC)

Arguably the break-out goalkeeper of the 2014 PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland season, Viitakangas delivered a league-best 12 clean sheets as he helped Sharks to the Premiership-Championship double. Standing a looming two metres tall and still just 20 years old, the former Gold Coast junior representative player shined further on the national stage in both the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Finals Series and the Westfield FFA Cup this year.
