Bechar Signs With Team Wellington

Nico Bechar (Michael Flynn)

Redlands United winger Nico Bechar will spend the summer in the New Zealand top flight after signing for ASB Premiership club Team Wellington, it has been confirmed.

Bechar, who originally hails from France, was a stand-out for the Red Devils in the 2014 PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland campaign, making 22 appearances and scoring eight goals to help his team to a sixth place finish.

The former Anderlecht youth player and Brisbane Roar triallist played for Sunshine Coast Fire in the first season of PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland competition, earning a nomination to the 2013 Supporters’ Team of the Year.

Redlands coach Matt Chandler, who previously coached in the ASB Premiership with Hawkes Bay United, confirmed that Bechar departs with the club’s blessings and remains in the Red Devils' plans for the 2015 PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland season.

“Nico will come back fit after playing over there and he will be ready to go next year. It’s a win-win for Nico and the club,” Chandler said.

In a statement on the Team Wellington website, Bechar said, “I spoke to (coach) Matt Calcott and I really liked what he and the club is trying to achieve this year.”

“It is a great opportunity to come and play in a new environment where there are a number of good players and I hope we can do well in, from what I can see, will be a very competitive league.”

The semi-professional ASB Premiership is the top division of New Zealand football and features eight clubs spanning the length of the country.

Team Wellington, who are based in the New Zealand capital, finished last season in second place in the league before losing the Grand Final to perennial Kiwi powerhouse Auckland City.

The ASB Premiership season kicks off later this month and is scheduled to conclude in March next year.
