FQPL Round Two Review

Surprise wins, early season pace setters and comebacks, the second round of the FQPL provided plenty of goals again as teams go tit-for-tat in the opening stages.

Southside Eagles | 3 – 2 | Souths United

Perry Park

Eagles swoop for three points

The Southside Derby was played on the Northside at Southside Eagles adopted home of Perry Park.

The match was a hard fought an entertaining encounter with Ethan Grimley scoring a peach of a goal in a game which included five goals as the sides traded blows in a surprise result.

Souths United fought a comeback in the dying stages of the games after trailing for much of the match, only for the Eagles to score late on to take all three points back across the river to Bulimba.

Wolves FC | 2 – 5 | Logan Lightning

Carmichael Park

Wolves struck down by Lightning

The goals continued to rain in as the storms rolled across the region with seven finding the net at Carmichael Park on Saturday.

Kei Takemoto proves a thorn in the side of Wolves as the skillfull attacker scored one and had a hand in a number of others in some way or another.

The Wolves had the first half but Logan arrived with the rain in the second, as five Lightning players scored one apiece in a shocking show of attacking talent.

Holland Park Hawks | 5 – 1| Ipswich Knights

Whites Hill Reserve

Knights knocked from their saddle

The Knights travelled to Holland Park on a high after their first fixture win over Southside Eagles but they were quickly knocked off their high horses by a Hawks team boasting some attacking firepower.

Marek Madle was simply unstoppable as he scored his second hat-trick in as many weeks, ably assisted by team mates who make this Holland Park side look like serious early season trend setters.

The Knights, who have looked dangerous, will feel heartened by getting this fixture out of the way and highlighting some changes which may need to be made.

Rochedale Rovers | 2 – 1 | Capalaba Bulldogs

Underwood Park

Rovers pounce on Bulldogs

A strong Capalaba travelled to Rochedale featuring former A-League stalwart Jon McKain. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs were confident.

Rovers attacker Ben Njie had other plans however, and goals either side of halftime put Capalaba on the backfoot.

A consolation goal to Ryo Ono put the bulldogs back in but the added incidents of a severe storm putting a halt to play and the send-off Oliver Kazzi stalled the side’s energy.

A good win for Rochedale after their first round disappointment.

Eastern Suburbs | 0 – 3 | Peninsula power

Heath Park

Peninsula knock power out of suburbs

A confident performance from a Peninsula team boasting serious power through pre-season, and have continued into the FQPL season proper.

Sam Roper poached a goal after just six minutes to set up the game before Daniel Cunha and Dean Briggs plied two more, which had Eastern Suburbs on the ropes 3-0 down after just 22 minutes.

The second half saw both sides play at a similar level but send-offs to Jordan Farina and Jake Reesby changed the game as both teams ended with 10 men each.

Power had the legs to see it through in convincing fashion.

Mitchelton | 3 – 3 | Sunshine Coast Wanderers

Teralba Park

New boys show fight in Mitchelton

It was a baptism for Sunshine Coast Wanderers as they played their first FQPL match against Mitchelton FC.

It was the Wanderers who struck first through Ben Lynch, but the visitors were pegged back to end the first half at one apiece.

The second half saw Mitchelton come out strong and they answered the Wanderers with two goals to lead 3-1.

The Brisbane side perhaps took their foot off the pedal and the Sunshine Coast side worked their way back into the encounter to claw it back to 3-3.

The dying stages of the game saw the ball move from one end to the other but ultimately no side could claim bragging rights.

Sunshine Coast Wanderers look impressive for a new team, while Mitchelton will search for more strength.

Wide Bay Buccaneers

BYE

The Buccs’ had the bye on the weekend which will give them time to tie up a few threads after their opening round home defeat against Holland Park Hawks.

After the Hawks result over Ipswich Knights though, the Buccaneers should take heart and it will be interested to see how they shape up against the Knights in Ipswich on Sunday, with both teams wounded by Holland Park and looking for redemption.
