Souths United Women have edged closer to the top of the PS4 NPLW Queensland ladder with a hard-fought 1-0 away win over SWQ Thunder on Saturday afternoon.

Deeanna Thompson's second-half goal proved to be the crucial blow as the Thunder succumbed to their third defeat of the season.

Both sides had their opportunities in the first half with Thompson hitting the cross bar in the opening 20 minutes before the woodwork again denied Souths an opening goal nine minutes later.

The deadlock entered the second half, with chances harder to come by after the break. Shortly after the hour mark, Thompson found some space to work in and finally opened the scoring.

The hosts had a late chance to steal a point, but Chloe Cole stood tall to keep her clean sheet intact.

Souths have now won four of their opening five matches and now face Gold Coast City, while the Thunder face the daunting task of Peninsula Power on their own turf.
