Redlands United captain Michael McGowan concedes few expects his side to defeat Adelaide United in the Westfield FFA Cup Round of 32 but that a lack of pressure could be the catalyst for an historic upset.

Redlands take to the national stage for the first time in their 99-year history this week when they host last season’s Hyundai A-League Champions at Perry Park in Brisbane.

Despite their longevity, Redlands do not boast the masses of silverware of other second tier sides around the country, however McGowan believes the fact his side have nothing to lose can only benefit his teammates chances.

“It’s going to be a hard game because they are the best team in Australia,” McGowan explained.

“I’m not going to say we’re all confident of winning but it’s still pre-season for them so we’re hoping we catch them on an off day.”

“Over the years there’s been lots of upsets in cup competitions around the world so I don’t think it’s impossible if we play the best we can.”

The 28-year-old defender, who has been a stand-out for the bayside club in his first season of PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues football, said the key was not to be overwhelmed by the opposition or occasion.

“I don’t feel that anyone should feel any pressure because everyone’s expecting us to lose.”

“So, from that point of view, there is no expectations on anyone and we will just do our thing.”

“I’m just hoping everyone can relax and enjoy the occasion and not worry about the pressure of playing an A-League team.”

While the match marks Redlands first foray against a fully professional club in a competitive setting, McGowan said his side gained confidence against a star-studded New Zealand national team in a behind closed doors friendly earlier this year.

“We had a good showing and we only lost one-nil against that New Zealand team that had a lot of good players like Chris Wood, who plays in the (English) Championship.”

“Our boys should be able to draw on that experience because those guys are all full time pros and in a one-off game we held our own.”

“New Zealand dominated the game and possession, as you imagine Adelaide will too, but it goes to show that we can play on the same field and compete.”

McGowan originally hails from the outskirts in Glasgow and played with semi-professional sides Albion Rovers and Annan Athletic before moving to Australia in 2013.

His side’s greatest strength is a hard-working midfield that includes Celtic youth product Graham Fyfe, ex Manchester United Academy player Michael Lee, Brazilian playmaker Igor Sao Jose and the tough-as-nails Paul O’Brien.

He said despite the diverse backgrounds of the Redlands side his teammates know they can rely on the vocal support of the always parochial Queensland crowd.

“I was at the (Round of 16) game last year where Lions played Perth Glory and there was quite a few people at that game.”

“A big turnout like that will give us a boost and I think everyone is looking forward to playing in front of a bigger crowd than a normal NPL game.”

McGowan added that despite the match being broadcast live by Fox Sports, he will have no pre-game jitters when he leads the team onto the pitch.

“I don’t get nervous, mate,” he stated emphatically.
