Souths United Women have stormed back into second place on the PlayStation 4 National Premier League Women's table after winning an 8-3 goal fest against SWQ Thunder Women at Wakerley Park.

The sides exchanged an incredible five goals inside the opening quarter hour before Souths wrested a telling three goal advantage to close out the half on the back of a Deeanna Thompson hat-trick.

Seven players ultimately shared in the spoils in front of goal between the sides – Souths' Terri-Amber Carlson and Thunder's Abbey Lloyd each netting a brace, while Souths' Jodie Burchell, Ayesha Norrie and Kirsten McGilvray, and Thunder's Rosanna Berry, also etched their name on the scoresheet.

The win sees Souths move back ahead of Eastern Suburbs FC Women in the race for second and the accompanying hosting rights in the PlayStation 4 NPL Women’s Queensland Finals.

For Thunder, the result officially ends their hopes of a maiden Semi Final appearance and sees them still needing to finish the season strongly to make sure of a top half finish.

Key Moments

1’ – GOAL FOR SOUTHS – Deeanna Thompson dribbles through the Thunder defence and appears to have run out of options before curling in a low finish to open accounts

54’ – CHANCE FOR SOUTHS – Norrie sees her shot bounce back off the crossbar and it falls invitingly for Carlson to hit a follow-up strike but the effort is denied by a diving save from Jensen

59’ – GOAL FOR SOUTHS – Carlson gets her revenge after being supplied by Kirsten McGilvray, dribbling into the penalty area before coolly finishing to complete her brace

70’ – GOAL FOR SOUTHS – McGilvray adds her name to the scoring list with a fiercely struck long range effort that brushes the fingertips of Jensen before crossing the line

80’ – GOAL FOR SOUTHS – Norrie smashes in a skidding strike that threads the needle of the Thunder defensive line and is beyond the reach of the diving Jensen

86’ – GOAL FOR THUNDER – Rosanna Berry finds late consolation for the visitors after winning possession just inside her own half and delivering a 50 yard screamer that catches out Souths goalkeeper Bianca Warrener to float across the line

What They Said

“No one wants to concede goals but we are a team that goes forward a lot so sometimes we are always going to be a bit loose at the back. So there’s always that possibility that we will concede. I’ve always been impressed by Thunder as a team. They never give up. Even though we scored eight tonight they never dropped their heads.“ – Gary French, Souths United FC Women coach

“Souths moved the ball very well. They are very quick and they attack in packs and it’s always hard to counter that if players are going to stay too wide. They moved the ball too quickly and too accurately for us tonight. “ – Anthony Bigby, SWQ Thunder FC Women coach
