Resilient Pride Keep Redlands Waiting

Western Pride Women held off Redlands United Women for a 1-0 win despite playing for over an hour with only 10 at Cleveland Showgrounds.

The visitors were unable to replace the injured Nicole Quinn midway through the first half but still did enough for a fourth win of the season as Melissa von Bischoffshausen’s 38th minute strike separated the sides.

In a cagey opening stanza, it was a collision between Redlands ‘keeper Samantha Vanderstam and a teammate which allowed von Bischoffhausen to roll the opener into an empty net.

The home side knocked on the door for an equaliser but ultimately spurned a golden opportunity to secure their first ever PlayStation® 4 National Premier Leagues points.

Pride’s second win in three outings hands them a three-point buffer on eighth-placed Sunshine Coast Women, while the Red Devils continue to prop up the competition ahead of Saturday’s visit to UQFC Women.

Key Moments

18’ – CHANCE FOR PRIDE – Melissah Von Bischoffshausen plays Darcie Wilson in for a one-on-one with Samantha Vanderstam, but the Redlands ‘keeper manages to smother the shot.

37’ – CHANCE FOR REDLANDS – Gemma Kline is inches from finding the opener as her header from Jordyn Witt’s cross goes narrowly wide of the posts.

38’ – GOAL FOR PRIDE – Vanderstam gets tangled up with her defender at the top of the 18-yard area, allowing Von Bischoffshausen to walk the ball into an empty net.

40’ – CHANCE FOR PRIDE – Emma Barnes forces a diving save from Vanderstam with a long-range strike.

73’ – CHANCE FOR PRIDE – An enterprising run out of defence from Mariecamilla Falaniko Ah Ki sees Wilson in on goal, however the striker fails to connect and sends her shot high.

85’ – CHANCE FOR REDLANDS – Ivana Mudnic pounces on a weak attempted clearance but her curling shot from inside the area is just tipped away by Kirsten Veeren in the Pride goal.

What They Said

“We didn’t come here expecting to score heaps of goals, just to play as well as we could and hopefully get the result we deserved. Playing with 10 players for the majority of the game (made it difficult) so I was very happy with the effort the girls put in as a complete unit.” – Len Manwaring, Western Pride FC Women coach.

“I thought it was a game that we could have won and should have won. The goal came from a lack of communication – something we’ve talked about a lot of times – and proves it’s something we don’t do enough. They had a few (opportunities to score) but so did we, we just couldn’t put them away.” – Jordan Wlodarczak, Redlands United FC Women defender.
