Kirsten Jamieson missed a last minute penalty as Olympic FC Women fell 2-1 to Souths United Women in a see-sawing contest at Goodwin Park.

2015 Golden Boot winner Deeanna Thompson struck twice for the visitors to establish a two goal half-time advantage, which ultimately proved insurmountable for the hosts despite a second-half fightback.

Allira Toby pulled a goal back from the penalty spot for Olympic shortly after the hour, however the hosts missed the chance to steal a point when competition leading scorer smashed her injury time penalty into the crossbar.

The result marks a first defeat for Olympic since April and sees the club surrender third spot on the ladder to fellow finals hopefuls Eastern Suburbs FC Women.

Meanwhile, Souths remain five points behind league leaders and defending Champions The Gap FC Women in this year’s Premiership race.

Key Moments

13’ – GOAL FOR SOUTHS – Deanna Thompson blocks an attempted clearance from Olympic goalkeeper Kaytlyn Ronan with the rebound rolling in to the back of the net

29’ – GOAL FOR SOUTHS – A free-kick evades a cluster of bodies before Thompson is quickest to react and duly smashes her shot from point blank range

38’ – CHANCE FOR SOUTHS – Terri-Amber Carlson is released one-on-one with Ronan but the shot-stopper wins out with a solid save to deny a full-blooded strike

49’ – CHANCE FOR OLYMPIC – Kirsten Jamieson’s touch puts Rebekah Horsey through a gaping hole in midfield but her first-time shot is parried away by Souths goalkeeper Bianca Warrener

67’ – GOAL FOR OLYMPIC – Jamieson wins a penalty after being felled by Tayler Stevens inside the box; Allira Toby sees her initial spot-kick saved by Warrener however a retake is ordered and Toby makes good on the second chance

74’ – CHANCE FOR SOUTHS – Georgia Keen attempts to head home a bouncing cross but Ronan is up to task with a tipped save

90+2’ – CHANCE FOR OLYMPIC – A handball sends Jamieson to the penalty spot with the final kick of the match, however her spot-kick is dramatically denied by the crossbar

What They Said

“(First goal) was a bit of ‘let’s just get my body in the way’ because the first time I went up to her she just booted it and I was like ‘if she is going to do it again and I get in the way, who knows what can happen?’-  and luckily I got a goal,” – Deeanna Thompson, Souths United FC Women striker

“We had a quick debrief after the game and a couple of the girls said we didn’t deserve to win that based on the first half alone and I can’t disagree with that. We didn’t deserve three points out of it but it’s crushing to lose the way that we did.” – Phil Canham, Olympic FC Women coach
