Brisbane City are back into the top four – following up their breakthrough Westfield FFA Cup win with a stoic 2-0 result over Brisbane Roar Youth at Corporate Travel Management Stadium.

In a box-to-box contest of few chances, City struck a goal in each half to back up a solid defensive performance and record their first ever win against Young Roar in five attempts.

Antonio Murray struck his fourth goal of the league campaign to give his side the advantage at the half, before Motoki Kakehi closed it out after the hour.

The result notches back-to-back PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues wins for City and extends their unbeaten run to four games in all competitions.

Young Roar remain seventh in the standings as they further an up-and-down campaign and marks their first defeat in a capital city derby this year.

Key Moments

23’ – GOAL FOR CITY – Scot Coulson’s cross from the left is met by a well-directed header from Antonio Murray back across goal that gets the better of Young Roar goalkeeper Andre Jannese

46’ – CHANCE FOR CITY – Motoki Kakehi’s cross is met by Nicholas Buckley, who fashions a low drive that draws a solid save from Jannese

68’ – GOAL FOR CITY – Samuel Sibatuara whips a corner kick into the near post where Kakehi delivers a looping header into the far top corner past the advancing Jannese

86’ – CHANCE FOR CITY – Sibatuara misses the chance to make sure of the result one-on-one with Jannese by scooping his shot high of the target

What They Said

“We changed our shape. We looked at how we defended with two lines of four and once we got the knack of it – and we only practices it for twenty minutes on Thursday night – we started to see where the spaces open up. I think we’ve been too eager to win balls back straight away and it probably doesn’t suit the sort of players we have. So this works a bit better and all of a sudden we got better possession and got forward in numbers. “ – John Kosmina, Brisbane City FC coach

“Leading into half-time I thought we had the lion’s share of the game but in the second half I was pretty disappointed with how we went about it. We went away from our structures and let the game become a little bit of a fight. That’s not what we’re about. We’re a footballing team regardless of what the other team does and we should always have a solution.“ – Josh McCloughan, Brisbane Roar FC Youth coach
