Substitute Chelsea Teveluwe struck twice from the penalty spot in the closing stages to earn Gold Coast City Women a 2-1 win over Western Pride Women at Bond University.

Following a scoreless opening stanza plagued by missed chances, Melissa Von Bischoffhausen edged Pride ahead after the hour with a stunning strike from near half-way.

However two defensive errors ultimately gifted the hosts their first three points of the campaign with Teveluwe holding her nerve twice in four minutes from the penalty spot.

The hot early autumn conditions took its toll on both teams during the contest, with Pride forced to play extended periods of the second half with only ten players.

The result sees City move to seventh in the league standings, two places below Pride.

What They Said

“We had a lot more possession than them in the first half and when we went down one-nil it was the team spirit that really built it up and got us through in the end. I’m really proud of the girls.“ – Jamila Riley, Gold Coast City FC Women

“At the end of the day the heat took its toll on our girls. We had two players go off with heat related injuries and that was really hard to come back from. We did take the lead with ten (players), and I was quite impressed with the way we played, but in the end we ran out of legs.” – Len Manwaring, Western Pride FC Women coach
