Gold Coast City have confirmed captain Justyn McKay will again lead the team in PlayStation® 4 NPL Queensland 2016.

The 29-year-old midfielder is the first confirmed signing for the newly branded club as it seeks to emulate the successes of predecessor Palm Beach SC.

The upcoming season will be McKay’s fourth in the national second tier after proving a stalwart for Sharks previously in the competition – holding the club record with 58 PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland appearances, as well as contributing 13 goals.

McKay said he was looking forward to a new chapter in his career when he takes to the pitch as part of Gold Coast City in 2016.

“It’s an exciting time with the changes and it’s clear they are going to benefit the club in the long-run,” McKay said.

“It’s something that I will personally relish and I hope I continue to play how I have done over the past few years but obviously with a different badge this time.”

“We’re starting again as Gold Coast City and we want to put the club back on the national scene.”

McKay captained Palm Beach SC in their PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland debut in 2013 – scoring a brace against Moreton Bay United - and said he is eager to create further history as skipper of Gold Coast City.

“It was nice to be the Palm Beach captain at the start of the NPL and to be the first Gold Coast City captain is quite a nice achievement as well.”

He said he is hopeful of repeating the Sharks’ recent successes, including winning the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland 2014 Premiership-Championship double and twice qualifying for the national stages of the Westfield FFA Cup.

“The FFA Cup was fantastic the past couple of years and the experience and the buzz of playing against Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers is a great feeling and something we want to emulate this year.”

Gold Coast City coach Grae Piddick said he had no hesitation in offering McKay the captain’s armband for the upcoming campaign.

“He’s a great leader on and off the field and I think his performances this year were even better than they were the year before,” Piddick said.

“As he is getting older his performances are getting better and he’s a great example to the younger players in the team,” he concluded.

Gold Coast City have confirmed that further signings announcements are expected in coming days.
