Australia Country Women convincingly beat Vanuatu 17-0.
Australia country looked the better side from the beginning, being awarded a penalty corner within the 1st few minutes. Though they weren’t able to score from the corner, a goal was eminent with Christine Benn scoring the 1st goal in the 3rd minute.
The Australians were soon back in the Ni-Vans territory a minute late, and their second goal followed, scored by Jordan Hill who finished a brilliant pass by Benn.
It was starting to turn into route. The Aussies’ skills were too good keeping the Ni-Vans stuck in their own half for most of the 1st half, the Vanuatu team only able to enter the Australian’s quarter once.
The Aussies piled on the points, and lead 13-0 at half-time (Benn (1), Hill (5), Hendrina Heyns (2), Shelby Thorneycroft (1), Caitlin Rosser (1), Madeleine Richey (1), Madeline Bott (2)).
Being the 1st OPC tournament for the Vanuatu Women it was a steep learning curve for most of them.
The Ni-Vans were able to enter Aussie territory at the start of second half but nothing came of it and they were soon driven back and put on the defensive. This eventually led to a soft goal by Hendrina Heyns, completing her hat-trick for the match.
The Vanuatu defence improved a little though in the second half with the Aussies only scoring 4 goals (Heyns(1), Bott(1), Rosser(1), Hill(1)).
Wayne Gaynor was happy with the result. “We watched our games last night, picked some areas we need to improve on,” he said.
They are now set to meet Fiji again to play for the OPC gold medal on Saturday. “(We) will try to polish up our game ready for the final, so we’ll have a bit of a broad spectrum tonight and work from there.”
