Marcus Wong Re-Signs for 2023

The Joondalup Wolves are pleased to announce the re-appointment of 2 x 2022 NBL1 Coach of the Month, Marcus Wong, as the NBL1 Women’s 2023 Head Coach.

Marcus joined the Wolves from Adelaide where he was a respected Coach and Sports Administrator at both the NBL1 and WNBL level. He has spent over 7 years as an Assistant Coach with the Lightning in the WNBL and over 10 years as the Head Coach of the Sturt Sabres in what is now the NBL1 Centrals where he led the team to two Championships.

This season, Marcus has led the Wolves Women to a record of 16-1 and a ranking of #1 on the NBL1 West 2022 ladder. He is a beloved character and highly respected coach among the group, which Wolfpack fans would agree has shone through on the court game in and game out.

Wolves CEO Andrew Summerville had this to say on the re-appointment of Marcus.

We really wanted to secure Marcus early so we could focus on the final series but also give him and the team some certainty and clarity on what our plans look like for next year. Marcus has done a fantastic job thus far and the teams record is not just the only indicator of that. Marcus has also taken a keen interest in the development of our junior’s players and has coached the D-League team when he can and integrates his practices with the U/18 Women’s WABL team. It also became apparent after the mid-season player reviews that the team felt strongly that Marcus was the right coach to lead them. We couldn’t be happier to have Marcus around for another season and we look forward to seeing how far he can take our Women’s program.”

“I have had a great experience in my first year here,” said Marcus, “and I am very thankful to Andrew and the club for the opportunities that they have given me. We have a great group of players and staff so when the opportunity was presented to me to come back for another season it was a no brainer for me. I am looking forward to leading the team for another year and helping the players continue their development, but we still have a lot of work to do to finish this season off as best we can, and that is everyone’s focus right now.”

Be sure to come out to support Marcus and the rest of the Pack as they finish out the NBL1 West 2022 regular season and head into finals! Congratulations on a great season, Marcus! We look forward to what’s ahead!
