North Eastern Soccer League enjoyed a winning start to this year's youth program, winning six of eight friendly matches against Geelong at Shepparton's McEwen Reserve on Sunday.

Played in hot conditions, the highlight proved to be excellent soccer played by all the teams.

"The results were irrelevant and I know the coaches weren't too concerned by the end score," co-ordinator Sam Saracino said.

"All they were concerned about was how the teams put into practice what they had already learnt in the six weeks of the program."

Saracino said it was a great way to start the program's string of games, which continue in Geelong this weekend before a home fixture with arch rival AlburyWodonga on February 18.

"We weren't really sure how the teams would go because they only had one session after Christmas . . . Geelong had been training since mid-January," Saracino said.

NESL recorded wins in the under-12 (4-1), 14 (4-2), under-15 (3-2) and under-16 (3-0) boys along with the two girls' teams.

The junior girls coasted to a 4-nil win, while the under-16 girls claimed a 2-nil success.

The under-11 (4-2) and under-13 (2-1) boys suffered narrow losses.
