NEWS: Deakin and Drysdale to do battle in GRFC Women’s Div 1 Grand Final on Saturday

DEAKIN Ducks will head into the GRFC Women’s Division One Grand Final clash with Drysdale SC on Saturday the overwhelming favourites after disposing of Barwon 6-0 in their semi-final last weekend.

The high flying Ducks have dropped points in only one game this year (a draw) and finished the regular season with an astonishing goal difference of 86:3! They easily accounted for Barwon at their Waurn Ponds home ground last Saturday, running out convincing 6-0 winners to advance through to this weekend’s Grand Final at Village Park in Barwon Heads.

Prolific goalscorer Madeleine Lee-Gow was at it again, finding the net on two occasions. She was ably supported by Andrea Thornotn, Hannah Gordon and Kelsey Icardi who all scored one apiece. The other goal was an own goal.

The Ducks will come up against underdogs Drysdale, which recorded a stunning triumph over second placed Kardinia College last weekend, defeating the Students 3-2 after extra-time. League Golden Boot Serena Clapp and Giselle Harris scored for Drysdale in regular time, with Nicole Carter netting the winner in extra time, while Caelli Wood and Sofia Harrop both scored singles for Kardinia.

The key to both sides’ chances of lifting the Cup will be in midfield, as both teams will be aiming to keep the supply flowing forward to their respective spearheads (Lee Gow for Deakin and Clapp for Drysdale) and at the same time look to restrict the flow to the opposing danger woman.

Saturday’s highly anticipated season decider kicks-off at 2:30pm at Village Park, the home ground of the Barwon Heads Soccer Club.
