NEWS: GRFC rep Surfside Waves to open Geelong Pre-Season Cup against Warriors Youth

SURFSIDE WAVES, making it's debut as the GRFC's representative in next year's Geelong Pre-Season Cup, will kick off the 36th instalment of the prestigious tournament when it takes on the North Geelong Warriors' Youth team in the second game of the opening night's double header on Friday 22nd January at the Bell Park Sports Club...

Meanwhile, returness Surf Coast FC will take on reigning Runners-up Corio SC in the actual tournament opener at 6:00pm.

The Torquay club, returning to the long running pre-season Cup competition after a four year absence, will be keen to make an immediate impression under new coach Steven Tillinger.

Corio, on the other hand, will be keen to get the ball rolling on what coach Robbie Noggler hopes will be a year when the Eagles bounce back following last season’s relegation from State League One. The game will kick off at 6:00pm.

In the second game of the opening night’s double header, North Geelong Warriors Youth will take on debutante Surfside Waves, who will be the inaugural representative team for the local GRFC League.

With the Warriors committing to entering a Youth side in the Cup, the clash with the Waves provides for a mouthwatering opening round clash between the best of the local amateur league’s players against the best of the region’s youth players. That game will kick off at 7:20pm.

The opening round’s action will continue on Sunday 24th January with Rangers taking on the hosts Bell Park at 6:00pm while overwhelming tournament favourites and current champions, Geelong SC, take on the newly rebranded State League Five outfit, Lara United, at 7:20pm.

The eight teams have been split into two groups. Group A consists of North Geelong Youth, Geelong, Lara United and Surfside Waves, while Group B includes Corio, Rangers, Bell Park and Surf Coast.

The 2016 edition of the Cup will be played over five weeks, culminating in the Final on Sunday 21st February.
