NEWS: GRFC Men’s Division One Pool A – Round 4 roundup

THE FOURTH round of the GRFC Men’s Division 1 Pool A Finals Series continued last weekend with the three highest placed sides all getting wins to keep the contest for participation in the Finals alive.

On Friday night in Ocean Grove, Surfside Waves and Geelong Rangers took centre stage at the Shell Road Reserve. The visiting Rangers came out on top with a breezy 3-1 win. Drew Corry netted a brace for the Dark Blues and was ably assisted by Scott Davison’s single. The consolation goalscorer for Surfside was Doug Miller.

Breakwater Eagles hosted Surf Coast on Sunday and defeated the visitors 2-1 in a close contest. Matthew Elsen has so far has scored in every game in the finals series. Sunday’s match was no exception as he followed up with a single against Surf Coast while his teammate Jack Plunkett netted his first goal in the finals series, shortly afterwards. The consolation goalscorer for Surf Coast was Marcus Jablonski.

Deakin Ducks defeated Barwon 2-1 in a similarly close matchup. The scores were locked at 1-1 with just minutes to go, when Harry Woolley bobbed up to score the winning goal for Deakin and seal the away win. Jake Ball nailed the first goal for Deakin while Nathan Borg scored for Barwon.

Looking at this weekend’s final regular Round fixture of the Play-Off phase, Deakin Ducks and Surf Coast will clash on Friday night at Deakin University at 8.30pm, Barwon Red and Surfside Waves will clash at Grovedale Reserve on Sunday at 3pm and Geelong Rangers will host Breakwater Eagles at Myers Reserve also on Sunday at 3pm.
