NEWS: Sprightly 86 year old Ron Currie takes part in 'Walking Soccer'!

AT 86 years of age, Ron Currie would have to be Geelong's - if not Victoria's - oldest known soccer player!

The sprightly octogenarian from Belmont saw an article in one of the local newspapers publicising 'the 'Walking Soccer' program at the Leisuretime Centre in Norlane West and decided it was an opportunity too good to pass up!

So, on Wednesday night - along with about 30 other people - Ron took part in his first game of organised soccer in more than 70 years! According to the jovial, yet fiercely competitive newbie to the concept of 'Walking Soccer', he was born in 1929 and last played the sport when he was 14 years of age.... way back in 1943!

Other notable veterans to take part in last Wednesday night's event were former Bell Park Soccer Club president Steve Gstalter and current Drysdale Soccer Club committee member, Geoff Briggs.

'Walking Soccer', run by Leisure Networks and endorsed by Football Federation Victoria, is a social version of the hugely popular five-a-side game, with participants penalised if they attempt to run during the game.

Originally targeted at men over the age of 50, it is now being embraced by men of all ages - some who cannot play normal soccer due to debilitating knee injuries.
