NEWS: Geelong Region Women’s Div 1 – Round 6 Preview

By: Lachlan SHIRLEY

SURF COAST and Deakin Ducks will kick off this weekend’s Round 6 action of the Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 competition on Friday night (tonight) at the Banyul Warri Reserve in Torquay North.

Surf Coast will be going into the round full of confidence after coming away with an impressive 5-0 win over Kardinia College last round.

Surf Coast currently sits in 6th spot on the table, just one point behind the 5th placed Ducks, who are coming into tonight’s clash on the back of a 2-2 draw with Drysdale last round.

Drysdale will host Barwon SC at the Drysdale sporting precinct on Saturday.

Barwon will be hoping to continue their winning ways after they easily defeated the previous ladder leaders Bell Park 4-1 last weekend.

Drysdale, on the other hand, will be looking to bounce back with a win after letting a win slip at the iconic GMHBA Stadium. Up 2-0 at one stage, Deakin managed to score two second half goals to finally make it 2-2.

Currently, Drysdale sits in 3rd position with five points and are only one point behind first placed Barwon in a tight tussle at the top of the standings with just two points separating the top five sides.

To further add to the importance of Drysdale getting a positive result out of this fixture, Barwon has a game in hand over both Bell Park and Drysdale.

In the final game of the round, Kardinia will host Geelong Rangers in the big ‘Bell Post Hill derby’ at Kardinia International College.

Kardinia is still yet to come away with any points so far this season, while the Rangers are coming back from a bye and currently sit in 4th spot on the table with seven points, just one point behind joint leaders Barwon and Bell Park.

Bell Park may slip further down the ladder after the weekend’s round, as it will be forced to sit out this week with a BYE.
