NEWS: Geelong Region Men’s Div 1 – Round 5 Preview

By: Lachlan SHIRLEY

LOOKING ahead to this weekend’s Round Five of the Geelong Region Men’s Division 1 competition, top of the table Geelong Rangers will visit 7th placed Lara United in the big northern suburbs battle between the two Navy Blues at the Lara Recreation Reserve on Sunday.

Rangers are currently three points clear at the top and are still yet to drop any points. It will be a very important game for Lara, however, who will be hoping for a win which could be very vital as they will be hoping to keep up with the top sides.

Meanwhile, on Friday night, Barwon Heads will take on Surf Coast at Village Park in Barwon Heads. Both teams have struggled in their starts to the season. Barwon Heads, who are in 8th have won one and drawn one game and have a -3 goal difference. Surf Coast are still yet to record any competition points with four losses from four games and find themselves in 9th spot with a -8 goal difference.

Also on Friday night, Corio will host Surfside Waves at Hume Reserve. Corio is currently in third position on the table while Surfside are only two points behind the hosts and find themselves midtable in 5th spot. A win for Surfside will see them jump above Corio on the standings.

On Sunday at the Drysdale Sporting Precinct, Drysdale will host the Deakin Ducks. Drysdale are currently sitting 4th with seven points. The Ducks are just one point behind Drysdale and a win would see them overtake the Bellarine outfit.

Wrapping up Round 5, Breakwater will host Barwon in a must win game for both sides at the White Eagle House. Barwon are 2nd on the table and will be hoping to win and not let the gap between themselves and Rangers get too big.

Breakwater, meanwhile, narrowly lost 3-2 last week and are still yet to get any points on the table. They currently sit last with a -13 goal difference and will be keen to cause a boilover and get back on the winners’ list.
