By: Lachy SHIRLEY

LAST weekend there was only one match played in the Geelong Region Women’s Division 1 competition, as it was a catch up round. Kardinia College travelled to Grovedale Reserve to face Barwon on Saturday afternoon, with the home side prevailing in the end with a comfortable 3-0 win.

Michaela Buchanan and Anika O’Callaghan both scored a goal for Barwon, the other scorer was not submitted by the club.

Barwon remains unbeaten and find themselves in second spot on the table with one win and two draws - only two points behind leaders Bell Park.

The loss however leaves Kardinia at the bottom, winless and with a minus 10 goal difference. The students, though, along with Deakin Ducks and Surf Coast have a game in hand on the rest of the seven team competition.

Looking ahead to next weekend’s Round 4, Drysdale SC will host Kardinia at the Drysdale Sporting Precinct on Saturday at 1pm. Kardinia has struggled in its start to the season and will be hoping to finally get the three points. Drysdale has only won one out of its first three games and will be likewise looking for a win in order to keep up with the teams above it on the ladder.

Table toppers Bell Park SC host Deakin Ducks at the Bell Park Sports Club which will prove to be a very important game for both teams. If Bell Park can beat Deakin, they will go five points ahead of Barwon leading into the next round. If Deakin manages to end Bell Park’s unbeaten run, however, the Ducks will go level on points with the current leaders.

Meanwhile, over at Myers Reserve, Geelong Rangers will host Surf Coast which will also be a big decider as to whether the top teams pull away from the pack or the lower teams keep within striking distance of them.

Surf Coast could find themselves on level points with Rangers if they manage a win against the hosts. Rangers, on the other hand, will jump two points clear of Barwon, if they come away with the three points.

Barwon has the bye this weekend.
