By: Lorcan MATHEWS

THE battle of the two newly promoted sides to GRFC Men’s Division 1, Barwon Heads and Lara United, will kick off Round 4 under lights at the Barwon Heads Village Park tonight.

Mark Smith’s Hammerheads are in desperate need of the three-points and what better way to do it then in front of their loyal home support.

The Navy Blues from Lara, on the other hand, have adjusted well to life in the top division, staging a stunning first Round win against last year’s beaten Grand Finalists Rangers to commence their campaign and Hayden Coombes’ side will again fancy themselves away from home tonight.

Kick-off is set down for 8pm.

SurfCoast FC v FC Leopold

TIME/DATE:8:30 PM / FRI 12 MAY

LOCATION:BANYUL WARRI RESERVE - PITCH 2

FC LEOPOLD will look to continue its relatively decent start to the 2017 Men’s Division 1 season away to Surf Coast at Banyul Warri Reserve, also under lights tonight.

The 8th placed Greens’ have enjoyed a reasonable start to their debut season, having drawn twice and losing once after three rounds, with Patrick Carey’s men proving a stern test for any side. They will hope to achieve their maiden victory against a side sitting just above it on the league standings.

Duncan Gow’s Surf Coast squad will be looking to bounce back strongly after a disappointing result against Deakin last weekend. This should be a cracker of a contest at Torquay North.

Barwon SC v Deakin Ducks FC

TIME/DATE:3:00 PM / SUN 14 MAY

LOCATION:GROVEDALE RESERVE - PITCH 1

A STUNNING fixture lies in wait on Sunday afternoon at Grovedale Reserve as Deakin Ducks, coming off an incredible 7-2 win over Surf Coast last weekend, will face the ambitious Barwon side in front of an expected bumper crowd at Grovedale Reserve.

Both teams are free scoring, with the reigning champions Deakin yet to fully hit their straps. This will prove to be a fantastic tester for both squads, who both hold equally high ambitions.

When asked about the upcoming fixture against the 2016 reigning champions, Barwon SC manager Dale Harris stated “we will look to bounce back strongly this weekend, the lads had a good week of training and this will be the closest we have come to a full-strength squad in terms of availability so far this season.”

When asked about the stern prospect of hosting a re-juvenated Deakin Ducks, Harris responded “we approach every game the same way. Credit to them, they are a great side and we will have to be at our best to get a good result”.

Geelong Rangers SC v Drysdale SC

TIME/DATE:3:00 PM / SUN 14 MAY

LOCATION:MYERS RESERVE - PITCH 1

AN IN-FORM Zachary Harry, who inspired Geelong Rangers with a clinical hat-trick last week, will once again be formidable for the 2016 runners-up as they welcome Drysdale to Myers Reserve this Sunday afternoon.

Brian Conn’s Rangers side registered a much needed away win last weekend and they will look to advance on that form again a Drysdale SC squad, managed by Jason Pickles who lye just one point off bottom place on the ladder.

A huge test for both sides, with Drysdale definitely in need of the three-points. A game to keep your eyes on over the weekend for sure!

Surfside Waves SC v Breakwater Eagles SC

TIME/DATE:3:00 PM / SUN 14 MAY

LOCATION:SHELL ROAD RESERVE - PITCH 1

A CLASH of the titans awaits, to wrap up Round Four action on Sunday afternoon, as it’s 1st vs 3rd when Breakwater Eagles travel to Shell Road Reserve to tackle top of the table Surfside Waves SC.

A fantastic fixture lies in prospect, with the Waves seemingly staying under the radar, while quietly notching three wins from three games under the coaching guidance of Pablo Mujica.

Breakwater Eagles have also begun their 2017 campaign in fine form and will look to continue their fine form that has seen strong results against the likes of Deakin Ducks and Barwon SC in the past two rounds alone.

Bill Wilson’s Eagles will be wary of a strong Waves squad however, with a mouth-watering fixture in readiness to wrap up Round Four action in the Men’s Division 1 Competition.
