NEWS: GRFC Men’s Division One – Match Report

DEAKIN Ducks Gold remain unstoppable on the local scene, following a 9-2 demolition of Drysdale SC last Friday night in Round 11 of the GRFC Men’s Division One competition.

Staged at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus, the League’s leading goalscorer Harry Wooley netted four for the Ducks, as did Nicholas Musarra, while Christopher De Hoog scored a single. For the hapless visitors, Dougie Weeks and Danny Graham both slotted home singles.

Geelong Rangers continued its ascent up the ladder to move into 7th spot, following a convincing 3-1 win over Deakin Green at Waurn Ponds on Sunday. Ben Noble bagged a double while veteran Rod Vanderchys chipped in with a single.

Fourth placed Surfside Waves caused a major upset when they captured all three competition points in a thrilling 3-2 win over second placed Barwon Red. Stu Mandley netted a brace, while Jack Peddler scored a single for the Waves, while Craig Cameron-Smith and Josh Robinson were the contributors for Barwon with singles apiece.

Nevertheless, the biggest upset of the round occurred at Grovedale Reserve on Sunday, when Barwon Blue recorded its first win of the season against Top 4 contenders, Geelong SC. Sean Mahon and Joe Mcgivern both scored for the home side as Barwon ran out 2-0 winners.

In other games, Surf Coast annihilated bottom side Elcho Park 7-0, while Barwon Heads overcame third placed Breakwater Eagles 3-0.

The only game of this weekend’s Catch Up Round is the clash between Drysdale and Elcho Park Cardinals, to be played at Howard Glover Reserve on Sunday at 3pm.
