NEWS: GRFC Women’s Division One – Match Report

DEAKIN Ducks continue to assert their dominance in Women’s Division One, with bottom side Geelong SC the latest club to experience the wrath of the competition leaders. Last Saturday’s 10-0 demolition of the hapless wooden spooners maintains Deakin’s 12 point buffer at the top of the standings.

The one sided Round 11 affair at Deakin’s Waurn ponds campus saw Andrea Thornotn hit the back of the net on four occasions for the Ducks, while Hannah Gordon chipped in with a brace. Other goalscorers for Deakin included Jacquie Denning, Brittany Patafio, Christie Merry and Kelsey Icardi all with singles apiece.

Across town, second placed Kardinia College defeated Surfside Waves 1-0 in a closely fought contest at the Bell Post Hill campus of Kardinia International College. Sofia Harrop slotted home the decider in the 35th minute.

In the other game, the visiting Barwon SC came out triumphant in a thrilling and high scoring affair with Drysdale SC at Howard Glover Reserve. After scores were locked at 4-3 at half time in favour of Barwon, both sides netted a goal apiece in the second half to see out the final score at 5-4 for the visitors. Serena Clapp scored a hat-trick and Olivia Smith netted a single for Drysdale, while Barwon’s goalscorers included Liana Banjanin, Michaela Buchanan, Laura Fitzpatrick and Emma Rea.

Deakin Ducks lead the competition table with 31 points, followed by Kardinia with 19, Barwon with 15 and a game in hand, while Drysdale makes up the top four with 14 points.

The only game this weekend is the Catch Up fixture between Barwon and Geelong at Grovedale Reserve on Saturday. Kick-off is at 1pm.
