REPORT: GRFC Women’s Division One – Round 2 review

DRYSDALE and Deakin Ducks were the star performers in Round 2 action of the GRFC Women’s Division One competition, with some scintillating performances on the field last Saturday afternoon.

Over in Ocean Grove on Friday night Surfside played hosts to a smashing Deakin Ducks side, the Ducks came as visitors and left as 0-5 victors. Showing a true display of skill, Hannah Gordon scored her first hat trick for the season to put Deakin in front, Madeleine Lee Gow and Jade Kirsch followed this with singles.

At Stead Park in Norlane, Geelong SC were visited by Drysdale SC. The Drysdale side showed total dominance across the pitch from the centre back to the striker. Star player Serena Clapp scored her first three goals for the season, while Olivia Smith and Sheridan Maddox chipped in with singles apiece. Jessica Rayner netted the consolation goal for Geelong.

The final Women’s game of the round was held at Grovedale Reserve, between Barwon SC and Kardinia International College and ended in a 4-2 victory to the visiting Kardinia side. Captain Bella Murphy-Bowen opened the scoring for Kardinia in the 30th minute, which was followed later on with Sofia Harrop’s brace and Caelli Wood’s single. On the other side of the field, both Liana Banjanin and Laura Fitzpatrick scored one apiece for the home side.

Following the completion of Round 2 of the elite Women’s competition, Deakin Ducks sit on top of the ladder, followed by Drysdale and Kardinia International College. Surfside Waves trail the leaders by 3 points and sit in 4th position while Barwon and Geelong are still yet to get wins.

The game of the round this weekend will be the first versus third encounter between table toppers Deakin Ducks and Kardinia College at Deakin University on Saturday. The Deakin side will be to aiming to continue their winning streak in the competition and extend their lead over second placed Drysdale SC.

Drysdale, meanwhile, will host close neighbors Surfside Waves at Howard Glover Reserve while Geelong hosts Barwon at Stead Park. All three Saturday games will kick off at 3pm.
