GRFC – (MEN’S DIVISION) ROUND 16 PREVIEW

DEAKIN Ducks will take on Drysdale SC at Howard Glover Reserve on Sunday with a spot in the Top Four at stake, in Round 16 action of the GRFC Men’s Division One competition this weekend.

The 4th placed Ducks are on the same amount of points as Drysdale but the Students hold a +2 goal difference advantage over the 5th placed Bellarine Peninsula outfit. Sunday’s epic encounter will kick off at 3:00pm.

With the current league leaders, Surfside Waves, forced into taking the weekend off due to the Bye, second placed Rangers will be keen to reclaim top spot on the ladder when they meet bottom side Breakwater Eagles at the White Eagle House on Sunday.

Led by key attacker Ben Noble - who bagged a double against Corio last weekend - and star veterans Troy Hardy and Scott Davison, the Dark Blues should prove too strong for the Eagles and jump back into poll position with just two rounds remaining. Kick-off is at 3:00pm.

In the only other Division One game on Sunday, 3rd placed Barwon SC could also find itself leapfrogging Surfside up the ladder, if it wins against second last placed Corio SC at Hume Reserve. Kick-off is at 3:00pm.

DIVISION TWO:

Third placed Lara SC will host top dog Surf Coast FC in a must-win Round 16 encounter at its Recreation Reserve complex on Sunday. A win will cement Lara in third spot on the ladder, ahead of the finals’ series which will commence in three weeks’ time.

A loss could well see 4th placed Bellarine Sharks overtake Lara into third spot, with the Sharks also playing in Lara, tackling the 6th placed Elcho Park Cardinals at Elcho Park.

Despite the Cardinals being out of finals’ contention, they will nonetheless prove to be a formidable opponent for the Sharks, who will need to be at their best to take all three points.

Fifth placed Deakin Ducks, meanwhile, will be ready to pounce should either Lara or Bellarine stumble in their respective matches. The Students are faced with a difficult assignment themselves, taking on second placed Barwon Heads at the Barwon Heads Village Park on Sunday. Kick off is at 1:00pm.

DIVISION THREE:

All eyes will be on Stead Park when the two runaway league leaders, Corio Bay SC Blue and Geelong SC meet in a ‘first versus second’ clash in the Division Three match of the round on Sunday.

Corio Bay took full advantage of Geelong’s draw at Lara last weekend to jump into top spot with just three rounds remaining. Sunday’s clash, which could well decide this year’s minor Premiers in Division Three, will kick off at 3:00pm.
