The first round has set the tempo with all teams looking to leave a mark early in the competition. The state of origin rivalry was continued in the first game with the GIO NSW Gladiators taking on the Suncorp QLD Cyclones. In a tight fought battle and a huge dual between Ryley Batt and Chris Bond QLD were able to come away with a great win 53 – 52.
The second game saw the Asteron Western Enforcers take on Victoria Protect Thunder in another exciting game. It started out as a close battle but in the end Victoria finished strongest taking the game 59 – 37.
Game 3 saw the introduction of the overseas contingent Vero New Zealand Te Waka Hou debut against the Suncorp QLD Cyclones. They signalled their intentions with a dominant 56 – 43 win to put all teams on notice.
The GIO NSW Gladiators were looking to make amends from their first game against the Asteron Western Enforcers and did so with a comfortable 76 – 40 win putting them back in the winning frame.
The last game of round 1 pitted two first game winners Vero New Zealand Te Waka Hou against Victoria Protect Thunder. The new Zealand team played superbly and came out strongest with a 65 – 51 victory heading into day 2.
