Kuala Lumpur:  Domestic and international coaches will be working together to set up a basketball training centre at The Summit Subang USJ from 1st July. Aimed at training young basketball players with a strong commitment towards improving, this would aid in raising the quality of play among our young Malaysian basketballers. The coaching will also help ensure the right basketball methodology is imparted through the systematic training. This is to build up a strong foundation for further skill enhancement.

The basketball training centre is located on the 4th floor of The Summit. Omid Dadfarnia, coach of the Asian champions, Iran, formed the Worldwide Sport Agency Company Private Limited with his own funds. He is here to introduce basketball training courses to teenagers aged 7 to 17 years.

Omid Dadfarnia, aged 35, has 15 years of experience in basketball coaching and has been involved in mini basketball for children (12 years) as well as college basketball and professional basketball leagues in Iran. Omid Dadfarnia also served as the head coach for the Iran Under-14 National Youth Team before coming to Malaysia.

Omid Dadfarnia settled down in Malaysia with his wife and 5-year-old son. He said: "I came to Malaysia early this year. Of late I have been noticing that there are a lot of very good basketball talents in Malaysia from watching locally organized matches. On the other hand I also found that young players here don’t have good self-discipline. They often act rash and this in turn affects their game. The basketball arena here is very different from Iran."

“We have five major leagues in Iran. Players aim to go further and gain paid contracts for playing. Self-discipline is particularly important in addition to playing skills. One must have a normal routine in life, follow proper dietary habits and also have a positive attitude towards life.”

The Iran national basketball team is the current Asian champions and has qualified to compete in the Sydney Olympic Games. Many players from the Iran Olympic team were coached by Omid Dadfarnia, including the lanky 7 foot 2 inche Hamed E. Haddadi, who is currently playing for the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA. The long and strong relationship between master and apprentice is still close knit up till now.

Omid Dadfarnia will be assisted by local coaches at the Basketball Training Center in The Summit. The local coaches are Mr. Ong Kee San, who previously coached his team to win the National Youth Championships and MSSM Championships twice. Meanwhile, Mr. Lew Choo Lin, who has worked for the Selangor Basketball Association for many years, will now be responsible for the training centre's administrative and player affairs.

The Training centre will launch daily training programmes every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Each age group, namely 7 to 9 years old; 10 to 12 years old; 13 to 15 years and 16 to 18 years old, will train on separate days.

The centre welcomes all teenagers and young players. Besides that, the training centre also welcomes school teams, district or state players and also club teams, to enroll at the centre.

Teenagers or youths who are interested in participating can log on to http://www.hoopsstation.com or visit the Selangor Basketball Association Official website http://www.selangorbasketball.com to download the application form; or contact Mr. Lew Choo Lin (019-2806006) for more details.
