A Ripper Basketball Weekend
PIDBA broke multiple records on the weekend. There were a record number of teams entered in the Southern Peninsula Tournament, the under 14 girls were the first girls team to make it to a grand final and win in the history of the club and it was the first time that there were three teams who played and won their grand final games.
The record number of eight teams in the tournament this year included two under 12 boys teams, two under 14 boys teams, an under 14 girls team, under 16 boys and girls teams and under 18 boys team playing to represent Phillip Island.
PIDBA came away with three grand final wins starting with the under 14 girls who had an undefeated run within division 5 winning against Nunawading 5, Sandringham 4, Ringwood 3, Whittlesea 2 to then play off for the grand final medals against Melbourne Tigers 5. The Phillip Island U14 girls maintained their confidence, focus and composure throughout the entire tournament to secure the grand final 42 to 26 point win. Well done to the team and Steve Kelly (coach) for the first recorded grand final win for a Phillip Island Rips girls team in the history of the club. Congratulations to Cara Moschetti, voted MVP for the grand final game.
The Phillip Island Rips under 14.1 boys team had an outstanding tournament run. They went undefeated, beating Waverley 3, Camberwell 2, Frankston 4 and Bulleen 3 to play off in the grand final game against Sandringham 3. It was a great game with a great 38 to 28 point win by the boys to secure their grand final medals and help Phillip Island get closer to the record of three grand final winning teams in a tournament. Great result for Nathaniel O'Brien (coach) and Chris Savona (assistant coach) and the team. Congratulations to Zac Walker who was awarded MVP for the grand final game.
With the Phillip Island Rips under 18 boys, grand final games are not uncommon, however the thrill of playing in a grand final is always in the air. They too won all four of their games in division one against a tough competition, which included Chelsea 1, Ringwood 1, Camberwell 2 and Shepparton. In the grand final game against Waverley 2, the under 18 boys secured their grand final win with a convincing 42 to 30 point game. Well done to the team and Terry Robinson (coach) on another successful tournament for Phillip Island. Congratulations to Keith Robinson for his MVP grand final award.
The under 12.1 boys played extremely well and had three wins out of four games, under 12.2 boys got better and better with each game, under 14.2 boys won two of their four games, under 16 girls won one of their four games and the under 16 boys who may not have had a win this time in their division, but got stronger with each game, finishing off with a very nail biting game for the tournament.
A huge thank you and congratulations to all players, coaches and team managers who kept a tight ship for the tournament to ensure all players knew where to be and when.
A big thank you to all the parents for all their support in driving the players to their games - stadium to stadium and for cheering them on.
The representative basketball season will run up until mid April 2019, so there are more tournaments to play and we will bring you the results.
