The Micronesian Games is heading to Pohnpei.
It will be Pohnpei's second time to host the quadrennial event as it
also welcomed athletes during the 2002 edition of the Games.
Pohnpei Lt. Gov. Churchill B. Edward presented to the Micronesian Games
Council their state's bid to bring the 8th edition of the Games in
2014, ensuring the group that Pohnpei has the capability to host the
event anew.
“We have the available facilities, which will be upgraded and repaired
in time for the Games. Accommodations and transportations for athletes,
officials, coaches, and others will also be taken care off,” Edward
said.
Pohnpei is proposing to have 13 sports to be played in the 2014 Micro
Games, namely, basketball (men's and women's), indoor volleyball (men's
and women), baseball (men), softball, athletics, swimming, table
tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, outrigger canoe, Micro All-Around,
lawn tennis, and spearfishing.
The target date will be in July with the Games running for 10 days, the same as the one being held here.
Edward, who was joined by Pohnpei sports officials during their bid
presentation at the MGOC meeting at the conference room of the Palau
National Aquarium, added Pohnpei's interest in hosting the next Micro
Games has the backing of the government of the Federated States of
Micronesia.
“Between now until we host the Games, we expect to see developments and
improvements in Pohnpei to get things ready for the 2014 Games,” Edward
said.
Pohnpei was the lone island-nation to submit a bid and after only a few
questions from council members, MGOC declared one of the four FSM
states the host of the 2014 Games.
