The president of Palau, Johnson Toribiong, has
hailed last night's opening of the 7th Micronesian Games as a
significant step in the country's development.
President Toribiong was on hand to welcome the 1,000 athletes who'll
will compete in ten days of competition in and around Koror.
"This is a very special event for Palau because not only are the
athletes from all over Micronesia came to compete, we have political
leaders from across Micronesia - from the Marshalls to Guam and CNMI,
so it a very exciting time for us it inspires us, it creates a sense of
brotherhood of sisterhood around the Pacific," he said.
The Micronesia games are held every four years, and bring together
sportsmen and women from Guam, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru,
the Northern Marianas, and the Federated States of Micronesia.
Standard sports like basketball and baseball will be played,
alongside traditional sports including spearfishing and an outrigger
canoe event.
