Launceston and Clarence women’s teams will play in a curtain raiser to the Hawthorn v Brisbane game as part of the AFL’s Women’s Round this Sunday.
The game that begins at 10.00am will see the two inaugural teams of the Tasmanian Women’s League battle for the “Pink Ribbon Cup”.
AFL Tasmania Community Programs Manager, Brett Mansell said, “The game should be a beauty as both teams are firmly entrenched in the top four and should challenge for the 2013 Tasmanian Women’s League premiership”.
Last week the Tasmanian Women’s team competed in the 2013 National Women’s Championships in Cairns and star players who played at the carnival such as Maddison Smith, Jess Wuetschner and Natalie Curtis will be on show at Aurora Stadium on Sunday.
Clarence Coach, Andy Smith said, “Our club was instrumental in getting women’s football off the ground in Tasmania as was Launceston so it’s probably fitting that we are both playing on Sunday as a part of the AFL’s Women’s Round”.
Launceston Coach, Michael Quill said, “I think the initiative is a fantastic way of promoting the women’s game in Tasmania. We are certainly proud of the role our club played in the creation of the Tasmanian Women's League and look forward to playing on Aurora Stadium on Sunday”.
The game has been supported by both AFL Tasmania and the Hawthorn Football Club.
