Motorcycling NSW has recently had several enquiries relating to the scrutineering of helmets.
With a range of helmet standards no longer complying with the General Competition Rules such as the DOT Federal Standard no 218 and Snell 2005 and earlier we take this opportunity to remind all officials to be cautious when checking helmets.
Officials are also reminded that where an Australian Standard AS1698 label is present that it always takes precedence over other standards even if those standards are no longer applicable. For example:
If a rider turns up to scrutineering with a helmet that has an Australian Standard AS1698 label upon it as well as a non-compliant SNELL 2005 label, as long as the helmet complies to all other physical inspection requirements, it is permissible to be used owing to the compliant Australian Standard Label being present. If the Australian Standard sticker was not present, then the helmet should not be passed as compliant.
If a helmet presented does not comply, officials should impound the helmet until the end of the meeting and return it at the culmination of the event in the same condition that it was impounded. Officials are not permitted to damage, alter or change any part of a riders possessions under any circumstances. If a rider objects to the helmet being impounded, they should be invited to withdraw from the meeting. Any rider who for any reason uses a helmet in an event that has not been passed by a scrutineer should be excluded from the event immediately.
Finally, we remind scrutineers of the recent bulletin released by MA that prohibits the use of flip front helmets in Road Race and Historic Road Race events. Helmets are to be of a single shell construction thus excluding any flip front helmets from use.
Further information regarding helmets can be found in the Manual of Motorcycle Sport or by visiting http://www.ma.org.au or by contacting Motorcycling NSW for further information if required.
