This year’s Bridgetown Scramble has been taken to new levels. The organisation, sponsorship and the breadth of talent shown on the track combined with the atmosphere of the event was awesome. A massive thanks to Nat and Paul Copley and the ...Classic MXWA Committee for putting the hard yards in behind the scenes to ensure the event was a huge success.

Also thanks to the Shire of Bridgetown, Bridgetown Lions, Motorcycling WA, Dot Squires, Peter & Maureen, Shirley’s Sewing Shed and John Phillips for their respective support.
Like last year, Bridgetown put on some pretty cold and blustery weather on Saturday with at least one well secured Quickshade breaking free and going for a 100m tumble up the access road. Quite an impressive sight! As always the night was spent in the true tradition of classic motocross catching up with old mates and making new ones while re-living those past glories around the fire and listening to music provided by Greg butcher from southwest entertainment.
As always the beauty of the ‘Orange Grove’ property is something that strikes everyone when they first arrive at the Wheatley’s magnificent Bridgetown property. The awesome nature of the Bridgetown track ensured riders were eager to get into the day’s racing so there were no issues in rounding up riders for sign on and machine examination. This year there was a crop planted to keep riders honest, running wide or deep wasn’t really an option with the threat of severe punishment for anyone caught carving through the crop.
Right, copy that! Once again a huge thanks to John and Nadia Wheatley for planting their crop around the track! This level of cooperation is amazing and really appreciated.
Practice. As always at Bridgetown with nice green grass it was ‘steady steady’ during practice to ensure that the bike stayed rubber side down. Pretty soon the grass gave way to dirt and it was game on. Too much fun.
Racing. In keeping with the club’s progressive philosophy of running events that are enjoyable and offering value for money there were all manner of classes offered on the day. Pre75A,B & C Pre80, Pre90A & B, over 60s as well as a 125 class. This year also saw a Veterans 35+ class for the first time as a support class with great success. The Veterans class has enabled likeminded enthusiasts to be able to compete at a Classic MXWA events on their modern bike which is becoming a very successful formula for growing our membership as these riders are able to experience what Classic MXWA is about. All racing turned out to be fair, hard and fast with Mitch Taylor and Jimmy Craig turning some seriously fast laps in their respective classes.
Once again in keeping with the family friendly atmosphere Classic MXWA ran two junior non-competitive classes, Junior A and Junior B. It was great to see junior riders revelling in the perfect conditions.
At the end of the day, The ‘Blokes in Bras’ novelty race was a 3 x rider, 1 x lap dash for cross dressing glory in the name of Breast Cancer Care WA. Starter Bill Copley looked quite at home wearing a tasteful nighty, while riders seemed right at home with their handling of some pretty large bras. Watching grown men dressed in full MX gear struggling to put on a bra in the heat of battle was pretty damn funny, most didn’t have a problem undoing them though... Blokes in Bras proved to be a great feature event, raising good money for a very serious cause. Many thanks to Dot Squires for her efforts behind the scenes preparing for the event. Also a huge thanks to the sponsors who provided prizes for the novelty race and also spot prizes for selected riders from the day’s event.
Once again thanks to Steve from Steve’s Motorcycles, flaggies and countless volunteers for helping make the event happen. Thanks again to Bridgetown Lions club for cooking breakfast and lunch; Tracy’s Treats for her coffees & treats and her contribution Breast Cancer Care WA. It was also great to see spectator numbers growing too.
All in all, an awesome event for which Classic MXWA can be proud Given the positive feedback received I’m sure next year will be even bigger again.
