The Classic MX season got off to a howling start at Darkan on Saturday the 29th of March with Darkan at Dusk. Right on cue a cold front moved across the South West during Saturday and brought strong winds but also delivered Hillman Park its first rain for the season. Once things settled down and dried out competitors and spectators settled down to an awesome evening of Classic MX fun under lights.
Given the growing membership base of Classic MXWA a number of classes were held and all were well subscribed. The night saw Pre75, Pre80 (incorporating Pre78), Pre90 A&B, Veterans +35 A,B & C and Juniors. The racing was fast, furious and fair in all classes with a number of ‘new’ Classic MX machines being put through their first competitive rides since being restored throughout the off season. Every season the quality of bikes within the Classic MXWA Club just gets better and better; these bikes are a tribute to their respective owners. Even one of the local Darkan sheep was that impressed with the bikes and event they kept dropping in to check out the racing…eventually the sheep was escorted from the facility before it ended up on a BBQ!
The highlight on Saturday night was the Pre90 Shoot Out for the FOX V1 helmet proudly donated by South West Yamaha in Bunbury. After some rapid elimination laps Kris Lindgren came out on top to pick up the helmet. Great stuff from all those riders that put in some hot laps in the pursuit of Kris and ultimately the V1 helmet! Although Kris rides a Honda CR250RK he was quick to sing the praises of his other bike, a Yamaha YZ450F. South West Yamaha also generously provided a Yamaha YFM700 Grizzly ATV to help with on field logistics during the event and provided a number of give-aways for the evening. A massive thankyou to the crew at South West Yamaha and if your chasing a bike, parts or accessories please support businesses that support us.
Thanks once again goes to Conbelt Services, Bridgetown Lighting Towers, Kordics Holden , Coates Hire Collie, McGlasson McGlasson's Electrical Refrigeration & Gas, KMK Carpentry, The Shire of West Arthur (Darkan) and the land owners. Without these businesses Darkan at Dusk would not have run. As expected the crew from Burger Box cooked up a storm on Saturday night and Sunday morning which was a really welcome addition to the event.
Behind the scenes a special mention has to go to Mark Kestel for his plumbing work leading up to the event and going above and beyond with his plumbing handy work on the night. Mark managed to squeeze in a few rides but well and truly had his hands full all night. Club members like Mark are a huge asset to the club. Paul Bailey and his fleet of earthmoving equipment also deserve a special mention for turning a dry, dusty sheep paddock into a premium Natural Terrain MX track. Well done Paul.
Thanks also to the flaggies, officials - Stuart Dick, Nick Maxfield, Bill Copley and Steve from Steve's Motorcycles for his commentary throughout the night, Nat & Paul Copley and the Classic MXWA Committee for their work in making the night the success it was.
We look forward to seeing all riders back at Hillman Park on the 3rd and 4th of May for a 80s Night followed by a ‘Come Try’ event on Sunday featuring classes for Classic, Veteran and Junior MX action riding the full Hillman Park MX circuit.
