Sunday, Muddy Sunday
The weekend of the 10th & 11th of August a number of Pre85MXWA faithful travel to Manjimup to take part in the Manjimup Club’s club run.
After a chilled out bench racing session Saturday night at President Copley’s mansion (listening to the regular down pours all night) it was off to the track early Sunday. As predicted the track was looking more than a touch damp in spots so the Manjimup Club decided that the event would be best run as a practice day.
Around the pits people seemed genuinely excited to see the bikes from the 70s and 80s. The big bore CRs and YZs of the eighties seemed to hold a special place in many people’s memories, with many remembering Leisk, Dack, Gall and Ellis racing the Manjimup 15,000 like it was yesterday. Kids got to see the joys of kicking a stubborn big bore and the rituals that used to be ‘normal’. To cap things off Jimmy Ellis was there to relive old times on the Busselton Motorcycles YZ465. Once a champion, always a champion. Jimmy peeled off some smooth laps on the 465 and proceeded to launch it off the jumps impressing all with his flying 465!
Anyway, back to reality and the rest of the herd. The first ride of the day proved to be entertaining as the track had a few ‘extreme’ sections thrown in just to keep things entertaining... the sandy berm that was there last time you rode Manjimup had turned into a dirty great bog hole on Sunday, a bit more enduro than MX in some sections. After the first Pre85MXWA practice run most riders regained their sense of humour and started to peel off a few laps at decent speed on their later runs during the day. All in all it was a good day, just a bit soggy.
A big thanks to the Manjimup Club for inviting the Pre85MXWA Club down to Manjimup. It’s always special to ride the Manjimup track, no matter the weather and track conditions.
An even bigger thankyou to Natalie and Paul Copley for their hospitality and tireless dedication to the Pre85MXWA Club and the sport of MX in WA.
