After Ghana's Women's National Team's qualification and participation in the 2011 Womens Afrobasket Championship held in Mali last year, the U18 Boys Team of Ghana are also gradually working towards playing in the Zone 3 Qualification Tournament to be held in Abidjan,Ivory Coast from the 30th June to 7th July.
The Ghana Basketball Association (GBBA) in May 2012 held 2 seperate Under 18 Boys Selection Camps to put together the top Ghanaian U18 Boys to represent Ghana in the Zone 3 qualification tournament for U18 Afrobasket 2012 to be held in Mozambique from 16th to 25th of August 2012. Selection camps were held at the University of Ghana, and also at the Aviation Social Centre. A total of 60 U18 players turned up for the 3days programme. After taking the boys through various drills and training evaluation activities a total of 15 players have been shortlisted and currently undergoing preparations towards the tournament in Abidjan.
The 15 Man list will again be trimmed down to the final 12 who will be leaving Accra for Abidjan on the 28th of June 2012. The Team management of the U18 Boys National Team is made up of 5 people which includes Coaches, Trainers and Medical Staff. The Management Team is headed by the GBBA Vice President of Programmes Technical and Development Mr. Iddrisu Gamel who has in the past and recent year's being at the forefront to rebuild and reposition Ghana Basketball on the Continent.
Support for the U18 Boys National Team programme has so far come from the efforts and benevolence of various individuals and stakeholders within the GBBA and the basketball community in Ghana. The GBBA is still working towards external and corporate support and hopefully will soon conclude on a concrete corporate support for the team.
