Women's Afrobasket 2011 update:Ghana arrives with four players short
The Ghana Women's National Team after several financial challenges to fund its trip to Mali finally arrived in Bamako Mali this evening at 5:30pm. The team's journey to Mali didn't come on a silver platter, as the GBBA had to split the entire team including its officials into two to enable them to afford to send some players and officials to Mali so as to be able take advantage of the opportunity to qualify for london Olympics 2012.
The official total number of contegent for each country is twenty one, which should include twelve players and six officials. But with the current financial challenges facing the Women's National Team only eight of its twelve players roster are currently in Mali. Four of the players and three officials have been left behind in Ghana with the hope that the GBBA will be able to raise money to send the rest of the team to join the group in Mali. This means that the team will only have eight players to play with against Mali the host nation on sunday 25th September. The chances of Ghana winning is now very very slim as the team will be lacking bench players for substitutions. In the case of any injuries it will mean that the team will be reduced to seven with only two substitutions. The Ghana Basketball Association is very thankful for the sponsors who's support has even made possible for the first group to be in Mali but its still calling on various corporate bodies, individuals and most importantly the government of Ghana to come in and help finance the trip of the other players and officials to Mali. The current situation of the Ghana women's National team can be very much attributed to the lack of support from the government of Ghana who have not supported the team with any money so far.
Current sponsors of the Ghana Women's National Team include MTN, Newmont Ghana, After seven basketball club, and Simavi Limited. below is a list of the final team roster for the Afrobasket 2011.
