Open Camp towards Afrobasket Womens Championship Mali 2011
The work didn't end after qualification, the Ghana Basketball Association quickly called back the team after one month break for an open camp to work on individual skills and conditioning for the battle ahead in Mali. With no support whatsoever from government the Ghana Basketball Association(GBBA) is keen on executing its plans towards the tournament in Mali come september 23rd. The current team at the open camp is made up of players based locally in Ghana. Open camp will end in the later part of August after which the last phase of camp will take off.
This time around the GBBA will be inviting foreign Ghanaian based players in the US & Canada to join the team for the last phase of camp in the first week of September. The GBBA had a very layed out and strong training programme towards the Afrobasket Womens Champioship but due to the lack of support from government mostly in the area of finances the GBBA is handicapped and has put a hold to many of the activities in the programme. Some of the activities which would have taken place had the GBBA been financial equipped included a US Training Camp for the foreign based players, Tour Camp for the Womens Team in the US against various US College teams, also was to start a residential camp pretty much earlier so the team will have more training sessions. But unfortunately these great plans would have to be put on hold for another year when hopefully the GBBA will be adequately equipped to execute.
With all these limitations the GBBA has been able to implement and run its open camp which is taking the girls through various skills training twice a week during the weekends. This programme is not just for the upcoming tournament but also to serve as a long term athlete development programme for young players who have been identified now and will represent the nation in the coming years.
