Ghana Qualifies for 22nd Women's Afrobasket Championship 2011 in Mali

The "Black Hoop Queens" of Ghana have qualified for the 22nd Women's Afrobasket 2011 Championship in Mali,Bamako despite loosing in a best of 2 qualification series with the Ivorian Women's National Team played in November 2010. The two games which were played a day after the other was more of an exposure for the Ghanaian Team who had not participated in any high level competitions on the continent for years. The last time Ghana qualified for this prestigious tournament in Africa was in 1977 when they placed 6th overall in Dakar,Senegal.

The Ghana Basketball Association was determined to take advantage of this opportunity to qualify amidst the lack of support from the Ghanaian government. Which only supported the trip with a bus for the team to travel to abidjan with. The lack of support from government has hindered the Ghana Basketball Association from executing its plans to develop basketball efficiently in Ghana and as a result as also affected the federation in participating in continental competitions and events.

FIBA AFRICA is 50years in 2011 and so is Ghana Basketball Association which was also established during the same period as FIBA Africa which was back then called the African Association Federation of Basketball Federations (AFABA). Ghana can pride itself of been amongst the ten nations that met in Cairo,Egypt in 1961 to constitute FIBA Africa. Nevertheless this great history is not recognised or even known by Ghanaians of this generation because of the National Teams' lack of participation in continental events. The Ghana Basketball Association is on a mission to get back on track with developing the game of basketball in Ghana as it turns 50 this year as it is "Better Late than Never". Ghana Basketball Association does need alot of work and support in implementing its strategic plans which were applauded by FIBA Africa & FIBA as the map for Ghana's success in Africa & Global Basketball.

The Ghana Basketball Association plans to start its 50th Anniversary Celebration with the Women's National Team "Black Hoop Queens" participation in the 22nd Women's Afrobasket Championship in Mali from the 23rd Sept to 2nd Oct. And there is no better way to start off the tournament than playing the opening game with the host nation. Ghana paired up in group A with Mali,Tunisia,Cote D'ivoire, Ghana,Mozambique, and DRCongo. Training camp has began and Ghana is poised to keep up the momentum in its progress to raising the flag of Ghana high in basketball.
