GIS Dorminates Rivalry Finals at ISSAG 2010
With love building up in the February air, the finals of the 2010 International Schools Sports Association Games (ISSAG)basketball tournament was all about rivalry action. After regular group action the girls category saw Lincoln Community School (LCS) defeat Akosombo International School(AIS) in the semi-finals 26 - 20, and Ghana International School(GIS) fly past Tema International School(TIS) 21-6 in the semi-finals. The girls rivalry game between LCS and GIS was dublicated in the boys category as GIS defeated SOS Herman Gmeiner 20-15 and LCS beating AIS 27 - 19 both in the semi-finals.
The two schools have a history of playing each other in the finals of International Schools basketball tournaments at local and continental level. The recent finals they both played in was in the 2008 West African International Schools Association Leagues (WAISAL) girls finals which was won by LCS. Lincoln Community School's journey into the 2010 ISSAG basketball finals had a little story behind it, when they opted out of the 2009 tournament as the girls defending champions in 2008. Their reason for opting out was the unsportsmanship behaviour of the SOS girls team in the 2008 girls finals when they refused to shake hands with them after a group stage game as well as refusing to show up in the finals when they both met in the finals. With that experience behind them now, they where looking to forward to returning to the winning podium of the 2010 tournament as they met the defending 2009 champions GIS in the finals. GIS where clear favourites after defeating TIS 21-6 in the semi-finals. Their upper hand over LCS was to be affirmed when they defeated them 14-10. This will mark GIS's girls team's second ISSAG tournament championship win in a row.
The Boys finals didn't have much story to it asides GIS's dorminance in the ISSAG Boys tournament for the past three years. Even though each year they seem to loose some of their key players to graduation, they always rebuild a strong team to win the tournament each yea. The 2009 finals was between GIS and AIS, but this year it was going to be LCS which was going challenge them to title. The first quarter of the game saw GIS dominating with an 11-2 lead over LCS who ended the half not having any defensive answers to the offensive plays of GIS. But lincoln wasn't going to go down without a fight as they fought back in the second half to set the full time score at 16 -19. Their come back seem to be too late as GIS won their third consecutive ISSAG trophy. The GIS boys team finals win added to their girls team fina's win over LCS mad them the number 1 school in the 2010 International School Sports Association Games.
The basketball season continues for both schools with the upcoming West African International Schools Association Leagues Basketball Tournament in Burkina Faso in the coming weeks, and the Lincoln Basketball Invitational Tournament in Accra Ghana in April.
