Gippsland Umpires Association goal umpire coach Brett Marriott is putting a lot of work to take his coaching to another level.
One of four GUA coaches working towards obtaining advanced coaching accreditation; Marriott has been selected to take part in the AFL umpires coach leadership program this month.
Taking part in the program is by invitation only, with a small number of leading umpire coaches from country Victoria selected to take part each year.
As part of the program, Marriott will attend an AFL match where he will meet the AFL umpires.
Coaches will then observe the AFL umpires during the match and share their observations with AFL umpire coaches at training at Ikon Park on the Monday night.
Head AFL umpires coach Hayden Kennedy will give an insight into the video review process with umpire coaches also able to watch the AFL umpires undertake their recovery session.
Following the recovery session coaches will sit in on a field umpire coaching presentation delivered by Kennedy and mingle with AFL umpires.
As part of the four-day live-in experience, umpire coaches will also attend a VFL umpire training and coaching session.
The umpire coaches also attend a number of lectures and seminars at Ikon Park.
AFL umpires boss Wayne Campbell will deliver an engaging presentation on leadership, while current AFL umpires Stuart Wenn and Matt Nicholls will discuss reaching potential as part of an insight to the AFL umpires leadership group.
Physical results expert Nathan Bonney will deliver strength and conditioning presentation, while AFL boundary umpire and sports dietician Rob Haala will also make a presentation.
Acting involvement in the Umpire Academy is a prerequisite for selection in the program, and Marriott has been rewarded for his dedication to the cause.
As the only current accredited goal umpire coach in Gippsland, Marriott has had an active involvement at sessions held in Dandenong, Korumburra, Morwell and Drouin each month.
Marriott was also selected as a match day coach for V/Line Cup selection trials held in Mildura this week.
Marriott goes to great lengths to gain an insight to how umpires are coached at a higher level, making regular contact with former AFL goal umpire and current VFL goal umpire coach David Flegg and occasionally attending VFL umpire coaching sessions.
GUA head coach Paul Vaughan, development coach Allan Magor and boundary umpire coach Davyd Reid have all previously taken part in the program and are also working towards obtaining their advanced coaching accreditation.
