SA Country Championship Award Winners

Mount Gambier Junior Lakers Award Winners!

The SA Country Championships have concluded, many of our Lakers teams found success through results however mostly through improvement and development.

A couple of our young Lakers stars were fortunate to be acknowledged for their on court efforts.

These awards commend the outstanding achievements of Trisha Flett and Sally-Jane Allen in the sports of basketball, athletics and netball at club, association, state and national levels and is awarded to the MVP of the Division 1 U14 Girls and U16 Girls Competitions of the South Australian Country Championships.

In January 1990, along with Sally-Jane Allen, Trisha tragically lost her life while travelling home from Albury after representing South Australia Country in the Australian Junior Country Basketball Cup.

Under 14 division one player Alyssa Duncan was awarded the Trisha Flett memorial Trophy after a terrific tournament that saw her team go down by 2 points in double overtime in the grand final.

What does it mean to win the Trisha Flett memorial trophy?

Receiving the Trisha Flett memorial trophy is a huge honour and I feel very proud that I won an award named after such an outstanding athlete who continues to inspire many athletes including myself.

Who would you like to thank?

I would like to thank my parents, especially Dad for all his advice. Trevor and Bryan for training me and sharing their passion and knowledge of basketball. Beth for always checking up on how I am going. I would also like to especially thank my Lakers team this season because without them I would not have been given this opportunity to win this award and Sharon for coaching us.

What are your Future basketball goals?

I aspire to play in and win more grand finals and also to make future S.A. Country and nationals teams, playing at the highest level possible. Most importantly I hope to continue to improve my game and be the best player I can be.

Joint winner of the Sally-Jane memorial Trophy was our very own Mikaela Horrigan who shared the award with Lana Gregoric from the Riverland.

What does it mean to win the Trisha Flett memorial trophy?

It goes to show the hard work I’ve been putting in is paying off.

Who would you like to thank?

I would like to thank the Allen family for donating this trophy and I'm happy and honoured to receive this award! I would also like to thank Bryan Green for coaching me and having confidence in me and telling me I can do better. My parents for driving me everywhere and encouraging me to do my best. Kristyn Dawe for team managing and being supportive through each tournament. And most of all my team mates for making the year a good one.

What are your Future basketball goals?

To make state and nationals as a bottom age u18 and continue to work hard to prove I am capable to everyone.

Congratulations to both girls and we wish them nothing but the best on the basketball journey.
