In
an action packed season full of exciting football, the final round of the 2009
Millewa Football League Season has arrived, with two teams taking it right down
to the wire to claim the final top 4 spot.
Although both Meringur and Nangiloc have been
at each other’s throats all year in pursuit of 4th spot, it is the
Roos who hold a one game buffer over the Demons, who will need a herculean
effort to gather enough percentage to grab their ticket to September.
But whichever way the season ends for Nangiloc,
coach Luke Stone can be proud of the development shown by his young chargers
over the course of the year, and will know that if this group can stick
together in the coming years, a return to the finals round is not far away for
the red and blue.
Meringur on the other hand have had a
rollercoaster season, with inconsistent performances threatening to derail
their finals aspirations. However, the Roos are hitting their straps at the
right time of the year, and could quite possibly be a surprise packet in the
finals series.
But they will need to get over the top of an in
form Nangiloc side this afternoon, who totally outplayed fellow finals
contender and reigning premier Euston last weekend.
However, the Roos also found themselves in the
winner’s circle last round, after dismantling Cardross to put themselves in the
box seat to claim the final top 4 position.
Both sides are sitting one all after two
encounters this season, and the prospect of a do or die clash on the line is
sure to make this game a terrific encounter. With both teams in superb form it
is difficult to choose a winner, but the team that gets off to the best start
will fancy themselves of claiming victory.
At Carramar Drive, Cardross have the unenviable
task of taking on a determined Gol Gol side at home, who will be looking to
rebound after their shock loss to Meringur a fortnight ago.
The Hawks had the bye last week to reflect on
where it all went wrong against the Roos, and with the finals not far away, Gol
Gol will be looking to get back some winning form today.
The Lions on the other hand will be more than
happy to rain on Gol Gol’s parade and claim a victory this afternoon, with both
supporters and players looking forward to a much improved 2010 season.
The Lions played some really competitive
football during the middle of the year, and despite dropping off in recent
weeks they will be looking give it their best shot this afternoon.
However, they may find that their best might
not be enough, and with Gol Gol determined to get one more win at home under
their belts before the end of the season, they should claim a big win today.
The final game of the round sees Werrimull make
the long trip out to Euston Reserve to take on the Bombers, in a match that
will also have no bearing on the top 4.
However, Euston will be looking to reload after
a disappointing performance against Nangiloc last week, and will be another
side looking to salute their home fans with a win before the finals.
The Pies on the other hand will be glad 2009 is
coming to an end, after a torrid year on field wise. However, there is plenty
to look forward to for the Werrimull Football Club in the coming years, with
the successful move into town a sign that things may start to be turning for
the black and white.
But their fortunes in the near future don’t
look quite as bright, and with Euston looking to gain some touch before they
start their premiership defence next week, the Pies will need to pull something
out of the bag to get their second win for the year this afternoon.
