With
just two rounds remaining in the 2009 Millewa Football League home and away
season, the battle for the last remaining finals spot is still up for grabs,
with both Meringur and Nangiloc determined to have their shot at finals glory.
The Roos moved a game ahead of the Demons with
their upset win over Gol Gol last week, and a win over Cardross could see them
seal their place in September.
But in the back of their minds will be their
last encounter with the Lions, in a game that saw Cardross record their first
win for the year in a stirring performance.
However the tables have turned in recent weeks,
with Meringur playing some superb footy in the run to the finals, while
Cardross are down on confidence and searching for pride to end the year on a
good note.
Both sides have been fallen susceptible to
inconsistency this year, and coaches Garry Hammence and Chris Bounias will be
hoping their respective sides are switched on and ready to go today. However,
the Roos seem to be gathering a nice head of steam heading into the finals, and
should take the victory at Cardross Reserve.
The other team still in finals contention,
Nangiloc, will be hoping to push their finals claims with a win over Euston, in
a match that is shaping up to be a cracker at Nangiloc Reserve.
The Demons showed they can mix it with the best
in patches last week against Bambill, but lacked the penetration against the
wind to give the Saints a real scare. Nevertheless, they will be extremely
determined and confident of defeating the Bombers, in a game they must win to
keep their finals aspirations alive.
However, they will need to be at their best if
they are to knock off Euston, who like Meringur seem to be hitting their straps
at the right time of year. The Bombers recorded a crushing win over Cardross
last week, and will be hoping to continue their good form with a win today.
This match will be a terrific contest, and
Nangiloc will stop at nothing to make sure they keep their season alive.
However, the Bombers may just have too much fire power up forward to edge the
Demons out in this one.
The final game of the round sees traditional
rivals, Werrimull and Bambill, clash at Lake Cullulleraine.
These two proud clubs have has contrasting
seasons this year, with the Magpies winning just the one game, while the Saints
hold a handy 3 game buffer at the top of the ladder.
The Pies are really struggling at the moment,
and season 2010 can’t come quick enough for such a successful club that has
been starved of success in recent years. However, the prospect of playing
against their old rivals should lift them, and more than pride will be on the
line this afternoon.
The Saints on the other hand have started to
regain their best side in recent weeks, and this has seen a return to the
devastating form that deserted them during the middle of the season. Bambill
were very good in the second half against Nangiloc last week, and they will be
hoping to carry that momentum forward into today’s game.
Although Werrimull are sure to give it a red
hot crack, they will find it extremely difficult to get anywhere near the
Saints, who will be looking to boost their percentage with a big win this
afternoon.
