With
both Meringur and Nangiloc fighting it out for the final top four spot in the
run to the finals, their respective games against league powerhouses in Bambill
and Gol Gol are sure to make Round 17 a very interesting weekend of Millewa
football.
At Lake Cullulleraine, the Roos run into a red
hot Gol Gol side in the midst of a 7 game winning streak.
The Hawks have taken all opponents to the
cleaners in recent weeks, and have certainly become short priced favourites for
the flag in that period of time. Gol Gol possess a very powerful forward line
capable of kicking a massive score, and the Meringur defenders will have their
work cut out for them today.
But the Roos have also been playing some handy
football in recent rounds, and although they may not possess the class of Gol
Gol, they will be fresh and ready to give it a red hot crack after coming off
last week’s bye.
There is no doubt that Meringur will be dead
keen to seal up a top 4 spot at the earliest opportunity, and they certainly
have the cattle to make this contest a good one. But they may find it hard to
kick a winning score against the Hawks today.
At Mildura Senior College, Bambill host another
finals hopeful in Nangiloc in a match that promises to be an exciting
encounter.
The Demons kept their September aspirations
alive with a crushing win over Werrimull last week, and will take confidence
from the percentage boosting win.
But they will need to be at their absolute best
if they are to knock off Bambill this afternoon, who last week rediscovered the
zip and excitement in their football that was a highlight in their play in the
first half of the year. The Saints will be hoping the return of key play makers
in the coming weeks will further ignite the side, as they set themselves for a
strong finish to the year before the finals.
This match may prove to be closer than what
many people believe, and the Demons will be hoping to gain an upset here to
boost their finals chances. However, the Saints aren’t on top of the ladder
without good reason, and will start favourites on their home track.
The final game of the round sees Cardross make
the long haul out to Euston Reserve to take on the Bombers.
The Lions were totally out classed in their
encounter against Bambill last week, but they will be determined to put in a
better showing today to give the supporters some encouraging signs for 2010.
Euston are also coming off a loss, but the
Bombers’ fighting spirit impressed many last week when they gave the in-form
Gol Gol a big scare. A win here will almost certainly seal third spot for
Euston, and the Lions will have to be at their absolute best if they are to
deny the Bombers’ hopes.
