Two
of the Millewa Football League’s fiercest rivals, Nangiloc and Cardross, have
the chance to resume hostilities this week, in a match that is sure to be a
bruising Round 14 encounter at Nangiloc Reserve.
Cardross will be fresh and ready after the
bye last weekend, while the Demons will be determined to bounce back after last
week’s thrashing to Gol Gol, as they strive to play finals football in 2009.
Matches between these two sides are
generally spiteful encounters, and despite only having one win against their
name this year, the Lions will fancy themselves of causing an upset today.
Nangiloc on the other hand will be bitterly
disappointed with last week’s result, where poor decision making and foot
skills let them down. However, they still have the capacity to play an exciting
brand of football, and they will not be giving up their finals hopes just yet.
This match is certain to be entertaining,
and sore bodies will be a certainty come the final siren. However, the Demons
pace and run through the midfield could prove a difficult obstacle for the
Lions to overcome today.
At Mildura Senior College, Meringur have
the unenviable task of attempting to knock off the unbeaten Bambill at home.
The Roos have claimed some impressive
scalps in the past month of football, and look to be gelling after an
inconsistent start to the year. However, for Meringur to have any chance, the
likes of Colin Keatch, Carlo Longeri and captain Dan Smith will all have to
turn in extraordinary performances if they are to get their side over the line
today.
However, the challenge of defeating the
Saints is one that has proved elusive for all sides this year, and Bambill look
to be showing no signs of letting up despite some key injuries hitting the
squad in recent weeks. The Saints will be boosted by the return of former
league McDonald Medallist, Ben Casey, who will provide yet another classy
midfielder to Bambill’s already impressive on-ball unit.
At home, it is hard to see the Saints’
unbeaten run being disturbed this week. However, they will have to keep in mind
the memories from last season, where from around this point onwards the Saints
started to run out of puff in the lead up to the finals, and any drop in
intensity is sure to be pounced on by the Roos today.
The final game of the round sees an inform
Gol Gol side travel to Lake Cullulleraine to take on Werrimull this afternoon.
Despite playing some impressive football in
the first half against Meringur last week, Werrimull again failed to run out
four quarters of football, which has become a far too familiar case for the
Magpies this season. Their task doesn’t get any easier today, as they take on a
Gol Gol side which is in good nick, and eying off sealing a second semi final
spot.
The Hawks have the most impressive forward
line setup of any side in the league, with the likes of Kaleb Sherwell, Jason
Bruhn and Dean Umback all capable of kicking large bags of goals. Add to this
the recent arrivals of Ben Parker and Jai Hudson to the squad, and the Hawks
are starting to build a very formidable unit in the run to the finals, and
should take the chocolates against the Pies today.
