Round
4 of the Millewa Football League will see Lake Cullulleraine take on a pink
flavour this weekend, when two traditional rivals come together to promote the
fight against breast cancer.
Arch rivals for over 70 years, the Werrimull and Bambill
football clubs will combine to get
right behind the Â"Pink Party theme", with the match to be played with a pink
football.
However come 2.15pm today, all this will be forgotten, as the biggest rivalry in Millewa football resumes on the field.
This match however, may not go down in the chronicles of
these two successful clubs, as both sides have contrasting positions on the
ladder. The Pies are yet to win a game from their first two rounds, and the
task is unlikely to get any easier against the Saints, who are in fantastic
touch at the moment.
To have any chance of an upset, Werrimull will need to
have all guns blazing this afternoon, while also finding a way to shut down
Bambill'Âs tall forward line and classy onballers. The Pies will be fresh after
having the bye last week, and will need team leaders Matt Leader and Colby
Loxton to have a big influence on the match if they are to compete with the
Saints.
As much as every other club in the league would love to
see the Pies knock off Bambill for their first win of the year, the Saints look
extremely impressive at the present stage and hardly look like being beaten.
With the likes of Brant Reid and Ben Milsom running amok across the midfield,
and their tall forward line in Brett Haase, Denny Fox and David Hall all
kicking bags in recent weeks, the Saints should be too strong for Werrimull.
Meringur head out to Cardross Reserve to take on the
Lions with a point to prove, after being belted at the hands of Gol Gol last
weekend.
The Roos had high hopes of announcing themselves as a
genuine threat to the competition last weekend, but they were humbled by the
Hawks and shown they have a long way to go if they are to be considered a
chance for the premiership.
Although Meringur have an array of goal kicking midfielders,
they need a key target to stand up and help the likes of Aaron Finch; who was
the Roos only multiple goal kicker last week.
Cardross were also well beaten in their last start
against Bambill, but will see this as an opportunity to knock off a potential
top 4 side. The Lions have solid contributors all around the ground,
particularly with Chris Bounias acting as the general in defence and Jake Zoch
winning the ruck taps with his exceptional leap.
But Cardross will need to be more consistent over four
quarters if they are to ruffle the feathers of some of the top sides in the
competition, and Meringur will be fired up, as they hope to get themselves back
on track with a win on the road.
The final game of the round sees Nangiloc take on
reigning premiers, Euston, at Nangiloc Reserve. This game will be an exciting
affair, with both sides capable of blowing games apart with their pace through
the midfield.
The Demons impressed plenty last week with their pace and
dash against Bambill, and certainly pushed the Saints for three quarters.
Graeme Glare and David Mike were fantastic all day for Nangiloc, and they will
be looking to help the Demons secure their second win of the season.
However, they will need a complete four quarter display
and a little luck to defeat the Bombers, who have gone through the early stages
of the year under the radar.
The Bombers will be severely hampered up forward, with last
year'Âs leading goal kicker Mahino Paola being cleared to play with Robinvale in
the SFL. Paola'Âs absence will add extra pressure onto the likes of Jamie
Buchanan and Sean Smith, who in conjunction with Paola have made the Euston
forward line the most explosive in the league in recent years.
However, despite their depth being tested, Euston should
still have enough ability and experience to kick a winning score, although
Nangiloc will certainly be on the prowl for an upset victory at home.
