Meringur have reclaimed 4th spot on the Millewa Football League ladder with an impressive 30-point win away from home, as they toppled fellow finals hopeful Nangiloc on Saturday.
The Roos were in total control all day, and put in an impressive performance against the young Demons after coming off a disappointing loss to bottom of the table Cardross last weekend. Meringur held a handy 22 point buffer at half time, and continued on to play four fantastic quarters of football to run away with a 5 goal win.
A highlight of Meringur's play was their ability to find many different avenues to goal, with Carlo Longeri, Nathan Yates, Luke Brown and Mark Fitzgerald all multiple goal kickers. As for the young Demons, their inexperience at playing in matches with a finals-like intensity may have backfired on them on Saturday, but there is no doubt they are still in the hunt for a top 4 position, and this match will serve as a fine learning curve for such a young side.
In other games, Gol Gol thrashed Cardross for the second time this season, as the Hawks handed the Lions a 183-point thumping at Cardross Reserve. After kicking 15 majors the last time these two sides met, Kaleb Sherwell had another day out, kicking 10 goals to give him an average of 12.5 goals a game against the Lions this season. Jason Bruhn and Dean Umback also joined into the act, with both chiming in with 9 and 6 goals respectively.
As for the Lions, Terry Atkinson and Jason Bolitho continued their solid form with workman-like performances. But in the end, Cardross proved no match for the dominant Hawks, and will be looking to regroup after coming back to earth with a shattering thud after such a fantastic breakthrough win last week.
In the final game of the round, Werrimull proved no match for the reigning premiers Euston, going down by 139-points at Lake Cullulleraine.
The Bombers seem to have returned to somewhere near their best form, and will certainly be looking to gain a full head of steam as they prepare for their title defence in the finals. As for Werrimull, after an impressive victory against Cardross a few weeks ago, they seem to have drifted backwards in the past month, and Saturday proved they have a lot of work to do if they are to compete with some of the powerhouses in the league.
One positive for the Pies will be the good form shown by veteran Stuart Mensch, who kicked 4 goals in a lone hand up forward. Michael Moodie and Graeme Mentiplay also tried hard for Werrimull, but lacked enough support from their team mates to give Euston any real troubles.
As for the Bombers, dynamic duo Mahino Paola and Brad Kennedy were fantastic up forward, nailing 13 goals between them and causing real headaches for the Magpie defenders. Further up the ground, the drive provided through the midfield by Sam Parker and Brad Smith saw them named high in the Bombers' best.
