EVANS PETROLEUM GIPPSLAND JUNIOR CUP REVIEW
Our U/18s performed exceptionally well winning three of their four matches and a respectable loss to the winners - the Gippsland Football League.
After an opening round victory over Mid Gippsland the U/16s tried hard but were no match for the Gippsland and West Gippsland in their following games.
U/16s
Started well with a 16 point victory over Mid Gippsland but was outclassed against Gippsland and West Gippsland. Captain Lachlan Hedrick made his presence felt in all three games and won the medal for the best Ellinbank player of the championships while Tyler Irving, Bailey Stephens and Josh White all provided good support in and around the midfield. Ryley Green presented well up forward as did Charlie Wans from limited opportunities and Lachlan Wilson impressed with three goals in the opening game. Vice-Captain Lachlan Guy, Lachlan Bambridge, Jacksen Barlow, Liam Harman Dorney, Matt Burr and Jaryd Kelly all came under notice at various stages across all matches.
U/18s
In game one it conceded the first goal against Mid Gippsland before ramming on seven unanswered goals to win by 39 points. In game two showed a lot of fortitude to bounce back from a 34 point deficit against the GFL with a fighting second half to reduce the end margin to 16 points and in the third game won comfortably over North Gippsland by 30 points before knocking over West Gippsland by 21 points.
Mathew Notman continually drove the ball inside fifty and received the medal for the best EDFL player at the carnival. Wingman Kane Oldham used his dash and skill well, rangy Catani forward Mitchell Davey showed good ability to read play and strong hands and so too fellow tall and Blues team mate Jackson Caddy. Isaiah Abrahams was tight and disciplined down back while Rhys George, Brandon Allen and Joel Paredes made substantial contributions centrefield. There was also a lot to like about the efforts across the forward line by Joe Murfet, Travis Ogden, Sean Symes and Harry Wans. Aside from the first quarter of their game against Gippsland it was a very consistent performance by the U/18s and all players made a say at some stage over the four games.
Everybody wishes Jaxon Notman a speedy recovery from a leg injury that saw him sidelined in the second quarter of the match against the GFL. It was also good to see Hayden Baker at both training and again today supporting his team mates and all hope he makes a speedy recovery from the serious internal injuries he suffered in a senior game last month.
The EDFL would also like to thank all involved with the junior interleague campaign in 2017.
In particular it is indebted to the coaches at U/16 level Jason Mitchell & in the U/18s Darren Ratten and his assistant Stewart Notman. Also the league would like to acknowledge our trainers Alan Massaro and Tony Stewart along with Keith Fort, the later for volunteering to undertake the timekeeping duties and Debbie Beck for the provision of the fruit and lollies at the half time breaks for all games over the afternoon. Many thanks and no doubt the players appreciate your support with these essential activities.
